The site of the competition, Tauras Hill, in the city of Vilnius is a prime location in Lithuanina. The Hill is situated at the head of the ‘decumanus’, and is very close to the “cardo” that organizes the capital city. The site enjoys a clear vantage point leading to stunning views overlooking the Lukiskiu Square, the River and the new city centre. In historical times, this location would have ideally situated a Monastery or an Emperor’s Castle.
The design proposal intended to turn this idea around- to bring this traditionally hieratic site to the everyday life of a vibrant, young, contemporary society; to link and integrate the building and the site with its surroundings, the neighborhood and the whole city. This was achieved by re-envisioning the hill as a system of greenery, sport, mobility, events and relaxation center. Paths through this landscape directly flows into the Main Hall Lobby.
The design for the Concert Hall building merges itself into this rich green landscape. The roof of the building becomes a garden slab at the level of 10 mt. that folds down giving the sensation that the hill naturally continues up to the roof level, blurring the lines of where the building begins and the nature ends. All usual and public functions take place under this green slab. The roof can be potentially linked with the green system of the cemetery and allows the view to extend behind giving the sense of continuity. The Halls are designed as three jewels, three stones of mineral Pyrite lights under the sky. Inside them, the Main Hall, the Small Hall and the Exhibition Hall take place. These objects break the slab in different ways defining a variety of spaces in-between. The observatory will be a New City attraction where everybody can come and watch the gorgeous panorama with a superb 360 view; shop \ library, the bistro, the kindergarten functionalities like the building with its immediate surroundings giving the sense of belonging to the immediate neighborhood as well.
